Former Bayelsa Governor and ex-Minister of State for Petroleum, Chief Timipre Sylva, has quit the All Progressives Congress, APC, saying the party has lost its soul.

In a resignation letter dated Monday and sent to the APC Ward 4 Chairman in Brass LGA, Sylva said he arrived at the decision after wide consultations.

He described his exit as painful, noting that he was part of the people who “built the APC with sweat and money.”

According to him, the ideals that gave birth to the APC have been “thoroughly and unrecognisably thwarted.” Sylva accused the Tinubu-led government of embracing a politics of “all is fair,” which he said violates basic decency and morality.

“The present Government, formed under the banner of the APC we once loved, has disappointed the vast majority of Nigerians,” he wrote. “I can see neither a credible attempt nor any possibility of a revamp.”

Sylva likened the APC to a “floundering ship” weighed down by “irredeemable iniquities,” saying he had no choice but to abandon it.

The timing of his resignation is significant. Sylva is currently facing legal heat. The EFCC declared him wanted in November 2025 over an alleged $14.8 million fraud. He is also facing a 13-count charge in connection with an alleged plot to overthrow President Tinubu.

In the same letter, Sylva copied the EFCC and accused the agency of acting like “an organ of the APC” rather than an independent institution of state.

He said he expects a “redoubled witch-hunt” but remains undeterred. Looking to 2027, he said Nigerians will vote to end what he termed the current “stranglehold.”
