The family of Nigerian novelist Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie is accusing Euracare Hospital in Lagos of negligence in the death of her 21-month-old son, Nkanu Nnamdi. The toddler died on Wednesday after a brief illness, leaving the family “devastated”.

According to allegations made by Adichie’s sister-in-law, Dr Anthea Nwandu, the hospital failed to provide adequate care, including denying oxygen and administering excessive sedation, which led to a cardiac arrest. The hospital has expressed condolences but denies improper care, stating that Nkanu arrived “critically ill” and received treatment in line with international standards.

Adichie shared similar concerns in a private message that was leaked online, detailing “gross medical negligence” that led to her son’s death. The hospital says an investigation is underway, and Lagos State’s health watchdog has launched a probe into the circumstances surrounding Nkanu’s death.
