Former Vice-President and the ADC presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar has unveiled a set of policy proposals ahead of the 2027 presidential election, promising to introduce major changes to Nigeria’s economic management if elected.

Among the proposals highlighted in his political agenda are reopening the country’s land borders and restoring fuel subsidy arrangements.

The proposals form part of Atiku’s broader argument that Nigeria requires a different approach to economic management, particularly in addressing the rising cost of living and the pressure facing households and businesses.

The former Vice-President has repeatedly criticised aspects of the current administration’s economic reforms, including the removal of petrol subsidy and the country’s border policies.

His latest proposals are expected to feature prominently in the political debate as opposition parties and other political actors intensify preparations for the 2027 general elections.

However, the implementation of such promises would involve significant economic considerations, including the cost of subsidy payments, government revenue, foreign exchange management and the impact of border restrictions on local businesses.

The proposals also raise questions about how an alternative administration would balance immediate relief for Nigerians with long-term economic stability.
