The Attorney-General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), has taken over the prosecution of former AGF Abubakar Malami (SAN) and his son, Abdulaziz, over alleged involvement in terrorism-related activities and unlawful possession of firearms. The Federal High Court in Abuja adjourned the case to March 10, 2026, for trial commencement.
The Department of State Services (DSS) had arraigned Malami and his son on charges including failure to prosecute suspected terrorism financiers and storing firearms without lawful authority. The defendants pleaded not guilty and were granted bail in the sum of N200m each, with two sureties in like sum.
The prosecution, led by Director of Public Prosecutions Rotimi Oyedepo (SAN), is reviewing the case file and is expected to open its case on the next adjourned date. The court had ordered the defendants to surrender their international passports and submit recent passport photographs as part of their bail conditions.
The allegations against Malami and his son include storing firearms at their residence in Kebbi State without lawful authority, and refusal to prosecute suspected terrorism financiers while Malami served as AGF. The case has sparked intense interest, with the AGF’s office seeking to demonstrate its commitment to tackling terrorism and related offences.
