ACTIVIST STAGES PROTEST AT UN OFFICE IN ABUJA.

A civil society activist has staged a protest at the United Nations office in Abuja, calling for global intervention to secure the release of schoolchildren and teachers abducted in Oyo State.

The demonstration comes as concerns mount over the abduction of 39 pupils and seven teachers from three schools in Oriire LGA on May 15, 2026 — Community Grammar School, Baptist Nursery & Primary School, and L.A. Primary School. One teacher was reportedly killed during the attack, while another later died in captivity.

The activist urged the UN to place Nigeria’s worsening insecurity on the Security Council’s formal agenda, arguing that mass abductions of students and teachers constitute a threat to international peace and human rights. He said the crisis extends beyond domestic law enforcement due to cross-border movement of armed groups and large-scale displacement.

The protest aligns with nationwide solidarity rallies led by the Nigeria Union of Teachers and civil society groups demanding urgent government action. Protesters across Oyo, Ogun, Abuja, and other states carried placards reading “Schools Must Be Safe Havens, Not Crime Scenes” and “Stop the Kidnapping of Teachers and Students Now.”

Victims have remained in captivity for over two weeks, with activists describing their condition as “horrifying and inhumane.” The federal government has deployed a specialized rescue unit and approved 1,000 forest guards for Oyo State to aid rescue efforts.
