Mohammed Sani Abacha, the first son of late former military leader General Sani Abacha, has failed to secure the Peoples Democratic Party’s governorship ticket in Kano State for the 2027 elections. He lost to party chieftain Muhammad Bello Dalhatu during the primary conducted on Monday.

Umar Danjani Hadejia, who chaired the PDP Governorship Primary Election Committee in Kano, announced the outcome after delegates cast their ballots. Dalhatu won with 2,233 votes, while Abacha received 749 votes. Hadejia described the exercise as orderly, transparent, and fully compliant with PDP rules, the Electoral Act, and INEC guidelines, noting that delegates voted without interference.

With the result, Dalhatu becomes the PDP’s governorship candidate in Kano. Hadejia praised the aspirants, delegates, security personnel, and party officials for their conduct and called on members to work together toward the general election.

This is not Abacha’s first attempt at the Kano governorship. He sought the PDP ticket in 2023 but lost to Sadiq Aminu Wali following a legal tussle between rival party factions. He also ran for governor in 2019 as the candidate of the Advanced Peoples Democratic Alliance.
