Six African countries have converged on Abuja to intensify efforts towards environmental protection and climate resilience across the continent.

The gathering, which has Nigeria at the forefront, is advocating for more home-grown African solutions to tackle pressing challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss, pollution and land degradation.

Experts at the meeting noted that environmental problems in Africa can no longer be solved by individual countries working alone, as degraded lands are reducing farm yields, while unpredictable climate patterns are increasing cases of flooding and drought.
Concerns were also raised over rising air and water pollution which continues to pose serious threats to public health and fragile ecosystems.
The meeting is being supported by the African Union, the Nigerian Environmental Society and the Federal Ministry of Environment, who are combining efforts to strengthen the African Environmental Society as a unified platform.
The platform is expected to enable environmental professionals and institutions across the continent to exchange expertise, share knowledge and develop practical, locally relevant solutions to Africa’s shared environmental challenges.
Stakeholders stressed that beyond protecting the environment, Africa must build capacity to deliver solutions that reflect its realities and improve livelihoods.
