Fourteen drivers have been taken to court in Jos by the Plateau State Police Command for altering and concealing vehicle registration plates.

SP Alfred Alabo, the command’s spokesperson, said the case followed a statewide compliance check on vehicle documentation ordered by Commissioner of Police, CP Bassey Ewah. The exercise was based on instructions from Inspector General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, to address security risks linked to untraceable vehicles.

According to Alabo’s Saturday statement, the 14 impounded vehicles were found with offences ranging from unregistered cars to plates that were covered, defaced, or swapped with foreign or manufacturer logos. The drivers and vehicle owners were charged for violating registration rules meant to aid identification and tracking.

The police described the operation as a preventive step against criminals who use poorly registered vehicles to evade arrest. CP Ewah instructed officers to carry out the enforcement without harassing law-abiding citizens and to uphold due process.

Residents were advised to register their vehicles properly and ensure plates remain readable at all times. Alabo said the command values public cooperation in keeping Plateau safe.
