KENYAN DOCTORS THREATEN STRIKE.

Kenya’s doctors’ union has warned of a nationwide strike over a reported plan to host a US-funded Ebola quarantine center for American citizens in Laikipia County.

The Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union said the proposal amounts to treating Kenya as a “containment colony” for a virus that did not originate in the country. Secretary-General Dr. Davji Bhimji Atellah asked why the US would fly exposed citizens to Kenya if it considers a 12-hour medevac flight to Washington too risky.

“If the United States believes the 12-hour medevac flight back to Washington is too dangerous for its citizens, by what logic is it safe to fly infected or exposed individuals into Kenyan airspace and drop them in Laikipia?” the union asked.

KMPDU said public hospitals remain underfunded and lack basic supplies, while the government negotiates deals with foreign partners. It called on Health CS Aden Duale and the Foreign Affairs Ministry to release details of the talks and cancel the plan.

The US State Department confirmed it is discussing a facility to isolate and monitor Americans exposed to Ebola in the DRC. Kenyan officials say no approval has been given. A rights group has also filed a petition in court to block the center, arguing it was negotiated in secrecy.

The Bundibugyo strain outbreak in the DRC has killed hundreds and was declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern by WHO.
