KENYA TRANSPORT HALTS AS FUEL PROTESTS TURN DEADLY.

Posted by

Fuel price hikes triggered nationwide protests and a transport shutdown in Kenya on Monday, leaving at least four people dead and 30 injured.

The strike was called by matatu operators after another steep increase in fuel costs last week. Kenya relies heavily on fuel imports from the Gulf, and supplies have been hit hard since Iran effectively closed the Strait of Hormuz, the route for about a fifth of global oil shipments.

With buses off the roads, commuters across major cities were stranded. Police and transport officials are monitoring the situation as calls grow for the government to intervene on fuel pricing.
