Tragedy struck on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Friday evening after a vehicle plunged off the Long Bridge into a ditch, leaving three women dead and several others injured on Friday evening.

The incident, according to the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency, happened at about 5:24pm close to Mikano, inward Lagos.

In a statement issued by TRACE spokesperson, Babatunde Akinbiyi, the agency said the accident involved three vehicles — a white Toyota Hiace bus with plate number KJA 247 YM, a white Toyota Corolla with registration BDG 867 HG, and another white Mazda bus marked AGL 891 XX.

Akinbiyi disclosed that 16 persons were involved in the crash. Out of this number, 12 were males and 4 were females. While 10 persons, including 9 males and 1 female, sustained injuries, the 3 fatalities were all female.

“16 people were involved. 10 people were injured and three female adults died,” the statement read.

Eyewitnesses told officials that the driver was on top speed before losing control, which made the vehicle summersault and fall into the ditch.

Personnel of TRACE, the Federal Road Safety Corps, the Nigeria Police and the Ogun State Ambulance and Emergency Service were deployed to the scene for rescue operations.

The latest accident comes weeks after a separate multiple crash at Kara on the same expressway on August 25. That incident, confirmed by the Ogun FRSC, claimed 7 lives and left 2 injured. It involved a HOWO CNG truck, a MACK trailer and a Mitsubishi Canter with registration JJJ920YA.
