India and Israel have strengthened their bond, upgrading their relationship to a Special Strategic Partnership during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Israel. The two nations aim to deepen cooperation in defence, artificial intelligence, trade, and technology, having signed several agreements on cybersecurity, trade, space exploration, education, and economic cooperation.
Modi’s visit has been seen as a balancing act in India’s foreign policy, navigating relationships with Israel and other Middle Eastern countries. The move reflects India’s long-term strategic interests, despite criticism from the opposition Congress party. The countries have expressed commitment to fight terrorism and explore opportunities for joint development and technology transfer in defence.
The partnership may lead to collaborations on advanced technologies, including the Iron Dome system. India and Israel also plan to finalize a free trade agreement and extend India’s UPI digital payment system to Israel. Additionally, Israel will allow 50,000 more Indian workers into the country over the next five years.
