Hungary has deployed soldiers to protect key energy facilities, amid rising tensions with Ukraine over a blocked Russian oil pipeline. Prime Minister Viktor Orbán accused Ukraine of imposing an “oil blockade” by delaying repairs to the Druzhba pipeline, which supplies Hungary and Slovakia.

The pipeline has been closed since January 27, with Ukraine citing Russian strikes as the reason. Orbán claims the suspension is politically motivated, while Ukraine denies the allegations, saying repairs are ongoing but hindered by Russian aggression (BBC).

The dispute has sparked fears of energy shortages, but the EU says alternative sources are supplying Hungary and Slovakia. Croatia is transporting non-Russian crude oil through the Adria pipeline, covering their needs.

Orbán’s actions come ahead of Hungary’s April elections, with critics suggesting he’s using the dispute to boost support. His ruling Fidesz party is trailing in opinion polls, potentially ending his 16-year rule.

The move has also led to threats from Hungary and Slovakia to halt emergency electricity supplies to Ukraine. The situation remains tense, with both sides digging in their heels.
