Sudanese refugees are fleeing war-torn Sudan to eastern Chad, where medical staff are treating victims of drone attacks, including Mahamat Hamid Abakar, who received treatment for a serious head wound at Tine hospital. Abakar, 33, had a 5mm metal fragment removed from his skull after being attacked in Um Baru, Sudan. Many refugees are victims of drone strikes, which both sides in the conflict have heavily deployed.

The war, now in its third year, has killed tens of thousands and displaced over 13 million people, triggering a humanitarian crisis. Tine hospital, on the border, is receiving wounded Sudanese, with Awadallah Yassine Mahamat, a Darfur volunteer, saying they’ve taken in a thousand Sudanese since El-Fasher’s capture.

Refugees face physical and mental trauma, with limited resources and prospects in camps. Kindi Hassan, a mental health official, notes the vulnerability of refugees, like 30-year-old Asma, who escaped an RSF attack on Zamzam camp, losing 11 family members.
