The Nigerian Navy, in a joint operation with other security agencies, has raided and shut down an illegal recruitment and training facility in Ukana West 1, Essien Udim LGA, Akwa Ibom State.

The operation took place on Monday, August 31, 2026 at 12:11 PM. It was carried out by personnel of NNS JUBILEE, working with 2 Brigade/Operation THUNDER, 6 Battalion Nigerian Army, and the Violent Crime Response Unit of the Akwa Ibom State Police Command.
According to the Navy, the facility was operating under the name “Merchant Seaman Academy”. It was allegedly being used to recruit and train unsuspecting Nigerians as “provisional cadets” of a purported agency.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the recruitment and training activities were not authorized or recognized under Nigerian law. The Navy says the scheme was designed to exploit people seeking careers in the maritime and security sectors with false promises of ND, HND, and BSc certificates.
12 persons were arrested during the raid:
- 6 suspected organizers/officials
- 5 recruits/trainees
- 1 cadet of the Merchant Seaman Academy
All suspects have been handed over to the Violent Crime Response Unit of the Akwa Ibom State Police Command for further investigation and prosecution.
The Navy described the operation as intelligence-led and a clear example of inter-agency cooperation to protect citizens from criminal exploitation.
The Nigerian Navy is urging members of the public to be cautious of recruitment adverts from purported maritime, security, or military organizations. Citizens are advised to verify the authenticity of any recruitment through official government channels before committing funds or personal information.
The Navy reiterated its commitment to work with sister agencies to safeguard lives and property and to deny criminal elements the opportunity to exploit the public.
