The Nigeria Customs Service, NCS, has recorded another major seizure at the Tincan Island Port Command, intercepting a container with concealed parts of pump-action rifles and two other containers with cannabis-infused products worth ₦373.8 million.

Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, disclosed this on Thursday during a press briefing in Lagos. He described the seizures as a major win against transnational criminal networks using Nigerian seaports to smuggle prohibited weapons and dangerous narcotics.

According to Adeniyi, the operation followed intelligence-driven surveillance. Container No. TEMU 184536/9, which arrived aboard MV VELIKA on July 8, 2026, was flagged by the Service’s risk management system for enhanced scrutiny.

A physical examination at the Customs Enforcement Station uncovered crates containing knocked-down components preliminarily identified as JoJeff pump-action rifles. The parts are currently undergoing technical examination to determine the exact quantity and configuration.

Expanding the probe led to the arrest of one suspect on July 31, 2026, at the Migfo Bonded Terminal while attempting to clear the container. Customs said documentary evidence, financial records and call analysis linked the suspect to the consignee, including a ₦10,000 payment traced to a company account tied to the consignee on the day of the arrest.

The Service confirmed that two suspects are in custody assisting with investigations, while a principal suspect is still at large and being tracked.

In a separate operation, officers also intercepted two 40-foot containers concealing cannabis-infused products among legitimate imports. The other items declared were two used vehicles, two used pumping generators, rolls of blue polypropylene spunbond fabric, new tubular batteries, and thunder arrester cables.

The illicit substances seized include:

1. 109 cartons of Delta-8 cannabis-infused pre-roll cookies — 8,720 pieces, 17.44kg, valued at ₦308.7 million

2. 125 cartons of Delta-8 cannabis-infused gummies — 740 packs, 515.2kg, valued at ₦40.7 million

3. 73 cartons of cannabis-infused cookies — 442 packs, 309.4kg, valued at ₦24.3 million

The total estimated street value of the drugs is ₦373,802,640.

Adeniyi reaffirmed the Service’s commitment to using intelligence, technology and inter-agency collaboration to secure Nigeria’s borders and ports against smuggling of arms and narcotics.
