A confrontation broke out at Unit 4, Ward 2 in Ilawe Ekiti during the governorship election after supporters of the All Progressives Congress and the African Democratic Congress argued over alleged vote buying.

ADC governorship candidate, Mr Dare Bejide, voted at the unit and accused unnamed politicians of bringing an undisclosed sum of money to distribute at the polling station, but said it was intercepted. He also claimed an APC chieftain arrived in a Toyota Jeep near the unit with a large amount of cash intended for sharing, which sparked the dispute.

Bejide said the argument escalated into a fight in which an ADC supporter was hit on the head and taken to hospital. According to him, the money was kept in a sack and one woman involved called the council chairman when the cash was about to be seized. “They kept saying ADC members were also distributing money, but they couldn’t mention anybody. But we know where the money was kept,” he stated.

The ADC candidate praised the Independent National Electoral Commission, saying electoral officials were diligent and the process stabilised after journalists arrived. “When you came here a few minutes ago, there was pandemonium, but the moment they saw you with your camera, they ran away,” he said.
