Borno State authorities say 720 ex-combatants have been returned to their communities after completing a government-backed deradicalisation and reintegration programme.

Officials stated that the individuals underwent vocational training, psychological counselling, and religious reorientation designed to help them abandon extremist ideologies. The initiative is part of the state’s strategy to reduce violence and support peacebuilding in communities affected by insurgency.

According to the government, the process also includes monitoring and community sensitisation to promote acceptance while preventing a return to militancy. Authorities added that providing skills and livelihood support is key to ensuring the former fighters can start afresh without returning to violence.

Stakeholders note that rehabilitation programmes are important for long-term stability, but they must be managed with accountability and community involvement to maintain public trust.
