A fugitive suspected internet fraudster lost his life on May 23, 2026, after a gunfight with Economic and Financial Crimes Commission operatives in Makurdi, Benue State. The suspect, identified as Asar Sesugh, had been on the run since escaping detention earlier in the month.

Sesugh was one of 26 alleged cybercrime suspects picked up by the EFCC Makurdi Zonal Directorate on April 28, 2026. A magistrate court approved their remand pending further investigation into the alleged offenses.

The commission’s Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, said Sesugh and two others broke out of the facility on May 4. The trio reportedly asked to use the restroom, then escaped through the roof of the holding area.

Following intelligence reports, EFCC agents located Sesugh with other young men around Kanshio, behind Mechanic Village, on May 21. The operatives said the group opened fire on them, prompting a response. Sesugh was hit during the exchange and found by the roadside.

He was taken to Police Cottage Hospital, Makurdi, where medical staff confirmed he was dead. His body was moved to Benue State University Teaching Hospital mortuary for post-mortem examination.

The EFCC has handed the case to the Benue State Police Command for investigation. Oyewale stressed that Sesugh died outside custody and was not under detention or bail when the incident occurred.
