OYO ISLAMIC LEADERS DISTANCE COMMUNITY FROM ABDUCTORS’ SHARIA REQUEST

Islamic leaders in Oyo State have disowned demands reportedly made by kidnappers of school pupils and teachers, saying the conditions do not reflect Muslim teachings. They insisted that the perpetrators cannot speak on behalf of the faith.

The response follows the May 15 raid on three schools in Oriire LGA — Esinele, Yawota, and Alawusa — where gunmen took captives and allegedly listed ransom, release of jailed commanders, vehicles, and adoption of Sharia provisions as terms for release.

In a joint statement Friday, Chairman Alhaji Ishaq Kunle Sanni and Secretary-General Alhaji Murisiku Abidemi Siyanbade said the community rejects any attempt to justify crime with religion. They stressed that authentic Sharia upholds justice, peace, and the sanctity of life, which contradicts kidnapping and extortion.

Citing Qur’an 3:32, the leaders noted that unlawful killing of one person equates to killing all of mankind, while saving one life is like saving all of mankind. They urged security agencies to accelerate operations to free the abducted teachers and students.

The community also advised residents to stay alert, report suspicious movements, and guard against distortion of Islamic values. Plans are underway for a special prayer session led by the Chief Imam of Ibadanland for the captives’ safe return.
