TWO SO-SAFE OFFICERS IN POLICE CUSTODY OVER OGUN MAN’S DEATH

The Ogun State Police Command has confirmed that two operatives of the Ogun State Community, Social Orientation and Safety Corps, known as So-Safe Corps, are in custody over the death of a man identified simply as Success. According to the police, Success died from injuries he allegedly sustained after the officers tortured him following a family dispute in the Oju-Ore area of Ota.

The incident began on Saturday after an altercation between Success, his mother and younger brother at their residence left him with a head injury. His mother then called So-Safe officers to intervene. Instead of handing him over to the police, the operatives reportedly took him to an uncompleted building along Coca-Cola Road where they subjected him to prolonged beating. He later died from the injuries he sustained during the alleged assault.

The Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Babaseyi Oluseyi, confirmed on Tuesday that the two officers involved had been taken into custody. The So-Safe Corps leadership also condemned the action, saying the officers acted outside the organisation’s mandate and standard operating procedures. Corps spokesperson Adegunwa Adegbuyi said the officers were ad-hoc staff who took the law into their own hands, and that the commandant does not condone human rights abuse. He confirmed the operatives were handed over to the police immediately for investigation and prosecution.

The case has sparked outrage in the Oju-Ore community, with residents sharing videos and accounts online alleging that Success was beaten to death in the abandoned building. The So-Safe Corps said it is working closely with the police to ensure justice is served.
