Teachers under the Nigeria Union of Teachers, NUT, in Benue and Adamawa states on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, joined nationwide solidarity protests over the abduction of schoolchildren and teachers in Oyo and Borno states.

In Makurdi, Benue State, protesters marched through major streets under the leadership of NUT Chairman Levi Akuma. They carried placards and chanted solidarity songs, demanding the immediate rescue of victims abducted weeks ago in Oyo and Borno.

Akuma said the peaceful rally was necessary to express frustration over the continued targeting of schools and education workers by kidnappers and attackers. “What we are demanding is the immediate rescue of schoolchildren and teachers kidnapped in Oyo and Borno States over two weeks ago,” he told journalists.

Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia, represented by Secretary to the State Government Deborah Aber, addressed the protesters. He assured them that his administration is working with the Federal Government to secure schools and guarantee safety for pupils and teachers. He added that abandoned schools are being rehabilitated to make education accessible and safe for Benue children.

In Yola, Adamawa State, NUT members also staged a protest, blocking the gate of the Government House. They demanded the immediate release of teachers and students still held captive by kidnappers nationwide.

The nationwide action follows NUT’s directive for all state chapters to stage solidarity rallies on Tuesday to press for urgent government action and safer schools.
