Police in France rounded up 780 people across the country after Paris Saint-Germain’s back-to-back Champions League triumph sparked street violence and property damage.

PSG sealed a second straight UCL trophy by defeating Arsenal on penalties. But the win triggered unrest in several cities, worst in Paris where fans flooded the Champs-Élysées and areas around Parc des Princes. Crowds set off fireworks and flares, vandalized storefronts, torched cars and barricades, and clashed with security forces.

Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez said 457 individuals were held in custody, with at least 280 of them in Paris. He described the scenes as “completely unacceptable”.

Two fatalities were recorded during the night. A 17-year-old boy was stabbed multiple times near the Champs-Élysées and was hospitalized in critical condition. A 23-year-old on a motorbike died after crashing into a concrete barrier on the Paris ring road while celebrating. Over 190 people sustained injuries, including 57 police officers.

To manage the fallout, authorities deployed 22,000 police and gendarmes nationwide, with 8,000 concentrated in the capital. Riot officers fired tear gas and used water cannons as they confiscated weapons and pyrotechnics from crowds.

PSG released a statement condemning the violence, saying such behavior does not reflect the club’s values. President Emmanuel Macron also denounced the clashes and promised legal action against those responsible.

Despite the unrest, the club’s victory parade still took place Sunday on the Champs-Élysées under tighter security. Officials reported burned vehicles, looted shops, and major traffic disruptions left behind from the night before.
