The African Democratic Congress is mounting pressure on authorities to release ex-Kaduna governor Nasir El-Rufai, insisting he is being held for his political views.

Party officials said keeping El-Rufai in custody goes against democratic norms and sets a dangerous example for dissent in Nigeria. According to ADC, no citizen should face detention simply for criticizing those in power.
In a statement, ADC asked the federal government to drop what it called “politically motivated restrictions” and grant El-Rufai his freedom immediately. The party warned that prolonged detention could hurt Nigeria’s reputation on human rights and free speech.
El-Rufai’s arrest has sparked reactions nationwide. His supporters believe the move is aimed at silencing him after his recent comments on national issues. Meanwhile, officials have kept details of the case limited while investigations continue.
Legal representatives for the former governor are already challenging the detention in court. Civil society groups have also joined ADC in demanding his release.
