The Abia State Police Command has arrested two young men, Nzubechi Chinagorom, 24, and Chinonso Chibundu, 25, both residents of Olokoro in Umuahia South LGA, over an attempted abduction of a 14-day-old infant.

According to DSP Maureen Chioma Chinaka, the Police PRO, the incident occurred on May 25, 2026 at the residence of Miss Amarachi Chinyereugo, 32, a nursing mother. Police said Nzubechi allegedly forced his way into her room and tried to take the baby girl. A struggle followed, during which the suspect reportedly stabbed the mother with a kitchen knife and the infant fell and hit her head.

Chinonso was said to have waited outside the house as a lookout while the attack was happening inside. After Miss Amarachi raised an alarm, neighbors and vigilantes joined in. The suspects fled but were later tracked to a nearby bus stop and arrested with the help of Olokoro Community Vigilante.

Police disclosed that the duo were allegedly found consuming substances suspected to be hard drugs at the time of arrest. Both mother and baby were rushed to hospital, treated, and have since recovered.

The Command said exhibits were recovered and investigation is ongoing at the State CID. The suspects will be charged to court on June 2, 2026.

Authorities are warning parents to be cautious around newborns and report any strange visitors to security agents.
