Opposition parties have criticized President Bola Tinubu’s administration as it marked another year in office, pointing to rising hardship across Nigeria.

The African Democratic Congress, ADC, said worsening economic conditions and public frustration could affect Tinubu’s chances in 2027. The party argued that the President appears disconnected from the daily struggles of Nigerians, including high cost of living, debt burden, and weak purchasing power. ADC also described Tinubu’s recent remarks about opposition figures as unpresidential, saying leadership at this time should focus on solving national problems rather than political attacks.

Adewole Adebayo, who ran for president in 2023 under the Social Democratic Party, SDP, said his criticism is not personal but is about issues affecting citizens. He listed hunger, inflation, poverty, insecurity, and unemployment as his main concerns. Adebayo urged Tinubu to stop referring to “what he met on ground” because voters elected him based on that reality. He blamed the manner of subsidy removal for triggering inflation and foreign exchange instability, and said government policies have made it harder for people to live on legitimate income. 

Adebayo also stated that SDP will not merge with ADC ahead of 2027 and that his party is preparing to present its own candidate.
