Former Minister of Power Saleh Mamman has been moved to Kuje Correctional Centre in Abuja by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to begin a 75-year jail term for money laundering.

Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court, Maitama, gave the order on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, after EFCC operatives brought Mamman to court to enforce his sentence. The judge stated that the prison term takes effect immediately.
Mamman was found guilty on May 7, 2026, on an amended 16-count charge involving ₦33.8 billion. On May 13, he was sentenced in absentia to a total of 75 years: seven years each on 10 counts, plus three years and two years on the remaining counts, with the terms to run consecutively. The court also directed him to refund ₦22 billion to the federal government.
According to prosecutors, the money was tied to government-funded hydroelectric projects, including the Mambilla and Zungeru power plants.
Mamman was absent when judgment was read, leading the court to issue an arrest warrant. EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede said Mamman went into hiding after his conviction. He was arrested on May 19 in Rigasa, Kaduna State, after reportedly leaving Abuja by taxi days after sentencing.
In court on Tuesday, his relative Shamsudeen Mohammed explained he was assisting Mamman with traditional medicine because of ill health. He told the court Mamman took a taxi from Abuja to Kaduna and stayed in a rented apartment in Rigasa, but said he did not know who owned the property.
The EFCC also submitted a fresh application seeking the forfeiture of five more properties linked to Mamman in Abuja and Kaduna. The assets include apartments, luxury suites, mansions, and a commercial plaza in Wuse 2, Abuja, allegedly acquired with illicit funds.
Mamman was Minister of Power between 2015 and 2021 during the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari.
