The Federal Government has announced plans to tackle rising substance abuse among students by introducing drug testing and stronger support systems in secondary schools starting from 2026. The policy will be rolled out in phases and includes adding drug education to the curriculum, plus more counseling and behavioral support for students.

The NDLEA and the Ministry of Education are working together on the rollout. Officials say the move is a response to increased use of drugs like tramadol, cannabis, and codeine-based syrups among young people in schools and higher institutions.
