The Department of State Services (DSS) has ordered an investigation into allegations by former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar that the agency was involved in plans to disrupt the African Democratic Congress (ADC) campaign activities in Sokoto State.

Atiku, who is the ADC’s presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections, had accused the leadership of the secret police of allegedly recruiting protesters to create unrest ahead of the party’s campaign activities in the state.
The former vice-president claimed that the alleged plan was intended to trigger disorder and provide the Sokoto State Government with an excuse to impose a curfew, potentially preventing the opposition party from holding its planned campaign event.
He also alleged that some protesters were mobilised around strategic locations in the state, causing traffic disruptions and threatening commuters.
Responding to the allegations, the DSS rejected the claims, describing them as inconsistent with its operations and its responsibility to protect political actors across party lines.
In a statement issued by its Deputy Director of Public Relations and Strategic Communications, Favour Dozie, the agency said its operatives had previously intervened to protect the ADC governorship candidate in Sokoto, Mannir Daniya, during an attack on October 31.
According to the service, its personnel evacuated Daniya to safety during the incident, while two DSS operatives were assaulted and subsequently hospitalised.
The agency further disclosed that Daniya personally contacted the state director of the service to appreciate the intervention and request additional security support.
Despite rejecting Atiku’s allegations, the DSS said its Director-General, Oluwatosin Ajayi, had directed an investigation into the matter.
The development comes amid growing political tensions between opposition parties and state authorities as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 elections.
