Four Nigerian-Americans have secured electoral victories in the November 3 United States midterm elections, winning positions across different levels of government in the country.

The successful candidates include Will Jawando, Junior Ezeonu, Oye Owolewa and Carol Kazeem, who emerged victorious in contests spanning Maryland, Texas, Washington, DC and Pennsylvania.

Their victories have drawn attention to the growing participation of Nigerians and people of Nigerian heritage in American politics and public service.

In Maryland, Will Jawando won the election for Montgomery County executive, defeating Republican candidate Esther Wells.

Results published by NBC Washington showed Jawando leading with 237,383 votes, representing 78.15 per cent, against Wells, who secured 66,383 votes, or 21.85 per cent, with 72 per cent of the expected votes counted at the time of reporting.

Jawando previously served on the Montgomery County Council and is the son of a Nigerian father and an American mother.

In Texas, 27-year-old Junior Ezeonu secured victory in the contest for the state’s House of Representatives District 101.

Meanwhile, Oye Owolewa won an at-large seat on the Washington, DC Council, while Carol Kazeem retained her position in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives.

Another Nigerian-born Democratic candidate, Segun Adeyina, was seeking re-election to the Georgia House of Representatives, although his result had not been officially called at the time of the report.

The victories represent another milestone for Nigerian-Americans seeking elective office in the United States, where members of the Nigerian diaspora have continued to participate in political, professional and civic activities.

The US midterm elections are held halfway through a president’s four-year tenure and determine the composition of Congress, alongside several state and local government positions.

The outcome of the wider elections is also important to President Donald Trump’s administration, as changes in the balance of power in Congress could influence legislative priorities, government oversight and the implementation of his policies.

For Nigeria, the emergence of candidates with Nigerian heritage in elected positions highlights the growing influence of the diaspora and its participation in political leadership beyond the country’s borders.
